These days with my commute, I read a book every week and a half or so. This book took my four weeks to read...as in, it literally took me four times as long as a book usually takes me. It is unquestionably the most dense, erudite book I have read since college. I wish I could say I loved it, but I just liked it. Wow! The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is because it is so long and so dense...it's wonderful but it's one you really have to be dedicated to read. I typically read 6 or 7 books per month, this one took over 2 months to read. I almost gave up with only 50 pages to go. That said Rushdie is a genious and this book is divine. Read it if you have the will to make it through. ...more

Whew, I finally made it through! I liked this novel but it is so densely written that I felt like I was wading through quicksand at times. I wanted to finish but had to force myself to keep going through certain sections. I felt a little deflated by the ending but overall (good and bad) enjoyed the story.

It took me about a full decade to finish, but I really enjoyed this book. It kind of reminded of One Hundred Years of Solitude, only in India, and with more than three names to be dispersed amongst fifty different characters.
