I found it very hard to stop reading once I'd got through the first three chapters and accepted that nothing much was going to happen.

She seems to have an astonishing knack for making fairly uninteresting characters interesting, which might be why she called her last novel Normal People.

I learned yesterday that she's going through a religious renaissance which might explain the ending, which I found a little too neat, but why not?

I do occasionally wonder why she has become the voice of her generation. I'd rather there were multiple voices, but that's not up to me.

A calm, intelligent, well-constructed, somewhat Joycean novel about love and family from a very skilful writer. ]]>
