The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt
"
Flicked through it in the bookshop and read through some reviews.

Looked as terrible as I expected.

One of the five star reviewers of this novel quoted the following as an example of the "amazing" writing contained within:

”Mrs. Barbour was from a society family with an old Dutch name, so cool and blonde and monotone that sometimes she seemed partially drained of blood. She was a masterpiece of composure; nothing ever ruffled her or made her upset, and though she was not beautiful her calmness had the magnetic pull of beauty--a stillness so powerful that the molecules realigned themselves around her when she came into a room.”

If this paragraph was a horse, I would shoot it to put it out of its misery and then turn it into glue.

It is all very well to reject "elitism" in an effort to encourage the participation of the majority, but the insurmountable fact remains that the majority of human beings are bloody idiots.

Keep in mind I'm a snob–if a snob is someone who thinks art should change your life. That said, I'm sorry. Though I am the type who likes the idea of Donna Tartt, who wants to like her work, I cannot extend this bias into a pretense that this book is anything special. In a life of reading for meaning, The Goldfinch falls more in the unfortunate and ideally avoided 'filler' category. While the work is bolstered by Tartt's sticking of the landing (the book can be looked back upon in a more golden light than it can carry through), this triumph cannot outreach its moderate ambition; nor can its impact justify the cost of time-in-mediocrity. No offense to those who are into it. I just need something more dangerous. ]]>
