one of Kafka’s most masterful demonstrations of figurative language in The Trial comes from his iconic parable, Before the Law. In this allegory, there is a man who seeks the law but is kept waiting by a gatekeeper his entire life. Right before the man dies, the gatekeeper says, “No one else could gain admittance here, because this entrance was meant solely for you. I’m going to go and shut it now” (217). The gatekeeper, as well as the door, symbolize the legal system, presenting itself as accessible and fair, yet ultimately remaining forever out of reach. This allegory represents Josef K.'s own experience in the novel. Like the man waiting at the gate, K. spends the entirety of the novel trying to understand the court’s rationale, yet he is only met by silence. ]]>
