A Beast In Torment

Uilleam MacRieve believed he’d laid to rest the ghosts of his boyhood. But when a brutal torture revives those ancient agonies and destroys his Lykae instinct, the proud Scot craves the oblivion of death. Until he finds her—a young human so full of spirit and courage that she pulls him back from the brink.

A Beauty In Chains

Seized for the auction block, Chloe Todd is forced to enter a terrifying new world of monsters and lore as a bound slave. When offered up to creatures of the dark, she fears she won’t last the night. Until she’s claimed by him—a tormented immortal with heartbreaking eyes, whose touch sets her blood on fire.

A Full Moon On The Rise

With enemies circling, MacRieve spirits Chloe away to the isolated Highland keep of his youth. But once he takes her to his bed, his sensual mate becomes something more than human, evoking his savage past and testing his sanity. On the cusp of the full moon, can he conquer his worst nightmare to save Chloe . . . from himself?]]>

Blay, after years of unrequited love, has moved on from his feelings for Qhuinn. And it’s about time: it seems Qhuinn has found his perfect match in a Chosen female, and they are going to have a young. It’s hard for Blay to see the new couple together, but building your life around a pipe dream is just a heartbreak waiting to happen. And Qhuinn needs to come to terms with some dark things before he can move forward…

Fate seems to have taken these vampire soldiers in different directions... but as the battle over the race’s throne intensifies, and new players on the scene in Caldwell create mortal danger for the Brotherhood, Qhuinn finally learns the true definition of courage, and two hearts who are meant to be together... finally become one.]]>

Before anything else, I just would like to say that I skipped pretty much all the parts that do not have Qhuinn or Blay in them. I've had it up to here with Ward and her characters sounding pretty much like each other, possible heroes for future books being giant douchebags to everything with a vagina except for their fated mate, the general slut shaming, and the constant reiteration of "...and they say the females are the weaker sex" and its variations as if to prove a point. I stayed because of Qhuay and fuck if I would allow the extra curricular crap to taint my last BDB read. So yeah, the rating and this review are reflective of only the Qhuay parts. Otherwise, I'd have given this a 2.

Saying that, though, there's not much else to say about this book that has not been said about the previous ones. The guys jumped through the same hoops, went through the same contrived misunderstandings, and teased me unmercifully until my balls were blue. Lover at Last differed from the previous books in that the guys put out, there was some blowjobs and buttsex[spoilers removed], Qhuinn actually sat down and was honest with himself, and Blay got [spoilers removed].

To be honest, it was exhausting having to go through pretty much the same things that have been going on since Lover Enshrined. But these are my boys. I've known them since they were itty bitty wittew pretans, suffered through the seemingly never-ending angst, killed myself with when they had their first kiss, and got all hot and bothered every time they so much as glanced at each other. So it doesn't matter how tiring this has all been. It was worth it.

It was all worth it just to witness that dance [spoilers removed]. It was all worth it just to see that reconciliation at the bar. It was all worth it just for those after-fuck cuddles, bonding scent, and heart to heart talks.

[spoilers removed]

As much as I have grown to be disappointed in Ward, though, I'm thankful she wrote Vutch and Qhuay as they were the catalysts that drove me to seek out m/m books. Without the homoerotic tension sizzling in the BDB mansion, I wouldn't have checked out Lanyon and fallen in love with Jake and Adrien. Or picked up my first Merrow book, gave my heart to Al Fletcher, and found out Merrow and The Kinks are my OTP. Or met Lindsay and Pip, Tony and Mac, Gilli and his daddies, Eli and Quinn, or Damen and Laurent.

So I guess it's fitting that after the simultaneous elation and disappointment that was this book, I now will seek comfort in the arms of the genre she inadvertently introduced me to. Because as much as I love Qhuinn and Blay and rejoiced in their mating, there's no denying that this was a pale version of what Qhuay is capable of. I love that my boys had their HEA and most of the basic things I require from this book were met, but niggles [spoilers removed]. I haz them. And these niggles are making me break out my comfort m/m re-reads just to prove to myself that man-love can be done right. ]]>
