Per delle ricerche che sto facendo, avevo bisogno di leggere la storia del Tannhaeuser e nella mia ignoranza pensavo si trattasse di qualcosa di corposo - non di un racconto. E così rollando il catalogo Amazon, l'unico libro di Tannhaeuser che trovo è il libretto dell'opera di Wagner. Non mi è piaciuto molto nè la storia (mediocre, ma ci può anche stare) ma soprattutto la parte critica di questo Quirino Principe. Anzi, a dire il vero l'ho proprio detestata. Mi ha urtata per la precisione. Non ho mai letto niente di questo signore, che pare invece goda di una certa autorità (traduce tanto, anche il Signore degli Anelli), ma ha un modo di scrivere così saccente, così autoreferenziale da renderlo insopportabile. Costanti battute a sfondo sessuale in riferimento al testo (in cui senza dubbio la sessualità gioca la sua parte, ma trattasi di un mito antichissimo, ovvero dell'iniziazione alla sessualità maschile da parte di una dea, cosa che in Wagner va praticamente perso mentre Principe ne fa un argomento quasi da bar) alcune anche abbastanza misogene, mi hanno resa faticosa la lettura del suo apparato critico (che non ho trovato poi nemmeno così interessante). Una sola cosa devo a questa lettura: adesso so che il Tannhauser è anche uno dei racconti dei Grimm e adesso so dove andarlo a trovare. Per questo i libri li finisco sempre tuttti, anche quelli che detesto: da tutti c'è qualcosa da imparare.

I don't care what others say. Tannhäuser is among the greatest operas and libreti from the 19th century. Every line is poetic, perfect. No other poem has taken me to such ecstatic heights. Combine that with music and you got the supreme experience.

A peça é claramente a entrega ao pecado. O proprio Heinrich não consegue se perdoar e prefere voltar ao mundo do pecado- O inferno- do que receber o perdão e o amor de Deus.

A more varied opera than his previous, and while his lyricism isn't strong he at least had a better idea of how to construct and work with his ideas. It works much better with the music...

Text of an opera about a guy who falls for Venus and after leaves her as endless pleasure becomes tiresome. Having sinned by indulging in physical pleasure he asks god for forgiveness and is granted it, for the low low price of his would-be girlfriend killing herself. God really is a bit of a tool.

A full and lushly written epic poem, an exceptional read.
