Meredith Fox has been going to Martha's Vineyard for the summer as long as she can remember. But this summer is the first one back since the death of Meredith's sister. It will all be overwhelming, but even more since the entire extended family will be together for her cousin's big wedding.
Unfortunately, Meredith's longtime boyfriend unexpectedly dumped her two weeks before the wedding, leaving her dateless. Luckily, she has the perfect distraction. Her family has a tradition of playing the ultimate game of Assassin every summer, and this year it will take place during the week of wedding festivities.
But her target just happens to be a very cute groomsman. She's determined to not let herself get distracted, not let herself be lost in another doomed relationship. But as the week progresses, she can't help falling for him, which may cost her not only the game, but also her heart.
Meredith's family's annual game of assassin at Martha's Vineyard during a summer wedding is the perfect chance to honor her sister's legacy, and finally join the world again. But when she forms an alliance with a cute groomsman, she's at risk of losing both the game… and her heart.
K.L. Walther was born and raised in the rolling hills of Bucks County, Pennsylvania surrounded by family, dogs, and books. Her childhood was spent traveling the northeastern seaboard to play ice hockey. She attended a boarding school in New Jersey and went on to earn a B.A. in English from the University of Virginia. She is happiest on the beach with a book, cheering for the New York Rangers, or enjoying a rom-com while digging into a big bowl of popcorn and M&Ms.
4.5 stars!! This book was soooo good!! Perfect for a summer romance. The characters are SO cute together and have such good chemistry. I also loved that this book isn't just a light romance, but it also has a ton of depth and follows the main character dealing with the loss of her sister. I also really enjoyed that this book takes place during a family wedding. It's so fun having a big cast of characters that are all one big fun family. And the entire book takes place during a game of assassin which made for a really really fun plot!
oh gosh. this story is adorable. fans of morgan matson and emma mills will love this!
what originally lured me in was the mention of the game ‘assassin’ in the blurb. i won a school wide game of assassin in 10th grade (so im pretty obsessed with it) and i cant remember ever reading about it in a book. so that aspect of the story was really fun for me and provided some great entertainment.
i also really like how the game is a way for merediths family to reconnect, mourn over a loss, welcome new members, and learn how to live again. its a very sweet story, with a large cast of interesting characters, and a cool beachy setting.
this is the perfect book to go along with your towel and sunscreen this summer!
upd: for people in the comments. i just DIDN'T like the book okay? and i said that one of the mai reasons is romance but really i just didn't get what i wanted to get from this book. i didn't gaf about the characters and for me the book was written poorly and the characters felt bland. so shut up.
honestly idk how to feel about this book. i expected it to be typical summer romance with a beach house vibes. actually the book wasn’t entirely different from this, but it still wasn’t how i imagined it.
so, the mc meredith and wit met on the first day of her cousin’s wedding week. at first they were just kinda teammates in the assasin game and were just “messing” around with each other, but then the feelings appeared and bluh bluh bluh. i mean yes the plot looks pretty okay, but i still didn’t like the book.
my main problem was the romance. it was literally out of nowhere and really bad written imo. at the very start mer was telling about her boyfriend ben and how he broke up with her a few days before her cousin’s wedding week, that he should’ve attend with mer. and yeah, they were dating for 4 YEARS. like girl, u just broke up with the guy u were for 4 motherfucking years and 7 days later u already in love with another one? okay it could be okay if she was the initiator of the break up, but BEN broke up with her and she was the one who didn’t want to. and okay, i could close my eyes if there at least was some build up, but there wasn’t and for me the build up of a relationship is the main thing in romance books.
but even though i didn’t like the romance, i really liked wit. he was cute and sweet. and this whole plot line with mer’s sister. it was really sad and i cried a little ngl.
I thought I’d really enjoy this because I love books with big families and I love a summer romance but I just couldn’t get into it.
I think it was the insta-love. It just seemed unrealistic and weird. I didn’t even have time to root for them to get together! The intense flirting just happened right away. It felt pointless to read without the anticipation of two characters finally getting together.
DNF @ 43% Couldn’t take the insta love anymore.😬 Also there wasn’t really a plot, just Meredith hanging out with her family and Wit. The writing style was also lacking- there was too many setting descriptions and not enough sophistication. There was too many family members for me to remember or care about. Meredith is a standard YA protagonist.
I loved this book! I truly enjoyed each chapter, I adored the motivational, feel good message it gives, but I want to talk about the secret formula which put me this book at my favorite YA reads of the year: - Assassin game theme: this smart game settling bring back the entire family who are still mourning of losing their daughter, suffering from unresolved issues. The fun, happiness, focusing on working as truly functional family as their eyes on the prize perfectly balance with sadness and grief they feel inside. - Both of the MCs are so much lovable: Meredith was dealing with her sister’s death, dumbed by her boyfriend, keeping her smile intact as she suffers from inner emotional turmoil: she’s tough, smart, sweet and Wit, the perfect guy she meets when she was not looking for love in her life mixes everything. But sometimes when true love knocks your door, it’s worth to risk everything, isn’t it? - Beach settling, family’s reconnection and self discovery of teens! I’m absolutely sold with this great formula. This book is powerful, bitter sweet, genuine, entertaining! Your feelings are everywhere! You laugh till your cheek hurts and then you cry as your heart ache for characters deeply! I’m giving my sweet, teen, family reunion, inspirational four stars!

“It's one of those special places where you feel like time doesn't exist. Where it will always be summer, where I'll always wake up with you.”
this book is literally this quote. it had no business being this good and cute, i literally giggled once in every two pages and the reason wasn’t just romance, characters were so lovable and funny that you automatically start to smile. it takes a place that’s called martha’s vineyard where whole fox family spends all of their summers and they have this traditional game that they play every year, which is called ‘assassin’. let me tell you, everyone is SO dramatic about this game that when someone is eliminated they take videos of it and make fun of the eliminated person, literally start debates if that kill can be counted according to rules… they are literally scared to go outside bc they are afraid to be eliminated.
and the family bonds- omg i’m a sucker for found family but this is literally a real family and it gives you everything you want, wise but funny grandparents, dramatic aunts, loud and joyful kids, drunk groomsmen.. did I mentioned there is a wedding where connects another beautiful family to another? they’re perfect, just incredible. everyone is helping each other to create the perfect wedding and even in basic days there is always this connection between them where one of them sets the table, other prepares the meal, another one takes care of kids where the other goes to market for missing things- it’s just that perfect big family.
descriptions are incredible too, at some point fmc sees a beautiful pinkish-orange sunset and remembers that her sister used to call this sunsets ‘pink-lemonade sunset’.. am i the only one who finds it incredibly cute 😭
as for the characters;
meredith; that precious girl heard compliments for her looks for her entire life, including her ex only complimenting to her external beauty, so she is tired of hearing that words and wants to be loved by her personality. it might be seem like a spoiled girl behavior but i can assure you it’s not, she just wants to be seen by her intelligence, interests and thoughts. and duality she is going through, she grieves for her sister so she pushes her friends but holds onto her ex, which who doesn’t know her sister. it’s so logical to me bc she feels guilty at the same time for not talking to them. but throughout the book she starts to understand that there are more than one way for every situation.
stephen ‘wit’; a. walking. green flag. he can sense that meredith needs support or some space, understand what she thinks just by eye contact and he really shows that he want to be with meredith, not just says it. my boy is literally a golden retriever, even meredith compared his excitement with her jack russell’s 😭
claire; even though she wasn’t in the book the way meredith and her family think and talk about her is so beautiful, you can understand how an incredible person she was. she had this though that some people had connections with faith that is written in stars.. HOW CUTE IS THAT- it’s literally invisible string by taylor swift 🥹
luli; i wasn’t even going to talk about her bc i was pissed but i can understand why she did that things. she was angry to meredith for not answering any of her calls and messages after claire’s death and i understand that, she needs someone to talk too but after meredith trying to be good with her she goes and says “don’t trust me when you need help to gather your pieces”.. like hello? grow up what is this, i can’t imagine saying that to my best friend- and the fact that meredith thinks luli never apologises so it’s okay? girl she should (i mean she did eventually but anyways) idk i’m annoyed 🫥
meredith & wit; THEIR CHEMISTRY IS SO GOOD 😫 the way they both hate nicknames so call each other with most absurd ones, always knowing what other needs or wants, the way they are joking with each other.. babies. they are cute babies. also i hate miscommunication trope with every cell in my body and their relationship was ..i don’t know it’s called but exactly it’s opposite, they are always so open and communicate so well, they are incredibly sincere and not complex at all, just cute and simple, i mean look at this;
“I wasn’t clinging to him; it was more like we were tangled together, an invisible string connecting us.”
children hiding pies from a golden retriever, grown up men splashing water to teenagers and making videos of it, to ‘kill’ the next target people ruining wedding events, everyone yelling/hiding/running/laughing, the ambition to win, the passion of game, how everyone loves each other.. if you need a light and cutesy summer book, I don’t know if you can find a better one than this book 💗
Granted, I'm totally biased, but this book makes me want to grab my beach towel, sunscreen, and water gun and read until the sun sets. I really love this one!
4.5 ⭐️ THIS BOOK MADE ME SO HAPPPPY!!!!! ARE U KIDDING?????
the perfect summer romance but w so much depth as well. i fell so in love w the characters!!! not just the main love interest but everyone at the vineyard. the entire big family dynamic was everything to me.
the assassin game was so fun to read about. and the entire plot of claire brought so much emotion into this book, i teared up several times.
wow. i’m so happy w this. truly. the only thing i wish was that there was more time involved!! it was just a week timeline, and i felt like i needed more. regardless i’m obsessed.
and as a swiftie.. the endless references made my entire day.
eeeeeeek, i really thought i was going to like this one. and booktube was all over it, so i am definitely a bit disappointed. i understand that this is a YA novel and that the intended audience for YA is slightly younger than myself, but here’s the thing.
it was insanely cringey. i can’t even begin to explain , the dialogue was so odd.
the relationship made no sense. complete strangers to complete best friends over the span of 5 days…
like what? so incredibly dumb. i felt 0 connection to any of these characters.
i would give this book a 1 star solely because the guys name is Wit. That was awful and terrible.
Minimal thoughts on this book but I just didn’t really like it. Would not recommend, but I did finish it so that has to mean something.
This is YA and it definitely reads that way, there isn't a whole lot of substance but it gave REALLY good fluff and sometimes that exactly what you are looking for in a beach read. I thought it was cute and endearing and I loved how the huge extended family just unconditionally loved each other. It was refreshing and I totally want to be adopted by them! The game of Assassin they played was so fun and kept the book moving and the romance was wholesome and sweet. I also loved the real life references of eateries and places in Martha's Vineyard and ofc all the TS references. Pick this up if your are looking for a casual and light read for summer 😎
“It's one of those special places where you feel like time doesn't exist. Where it will always be summer, where I'll always wake up with you.”
Alright, here we are I suppose 😔
I am honestly so disappointed with this book. Me and my friend were both so excited to read this, for the Taylor Swift references (which BY THE WAY, there were less than I would have liked and less than I thought because everyone was all like "there are so many Taylor Swift references in this!!" when in fact there actually weren't that many) and also just for the summer romance vibes. It did serve the summer romance vibes, but that was kinda dampened by my hatred for the romance.
So anywho, let's get into this rant! (it's been a while since I've written one, so even though I'm disappointed, I'm also excited 🥳)
The Plot
It's honestly really funny how you can be all like "aw this is so cute and fun" in the beginning of a book and then you reach the halfway point and then suddenly you're all "oh my god whyyy" with a bunch of eye rolls. I don't know how it happened, but after Wit and Meredith got closer MUCH faster than I would've liked, it just went downhill from there for me.
The plot was fun, I love books where they play games like this, like in (I love that book) and reading that book helped me EASILY predict one of the plot twists, because obviously it was gonna happen because ✨drama✨
There was one weird plot twist that I had not predicted, but it was honestly confusing. To be fair, at that point I couldn't care less about the characters or anything, but it was still surprising and a little odd.
Also, the epilogue would've been cute, but I'm bitter so I didn't like it 😍
“Claire never went anywhere without a book, and she’d taught me to do the same.”
same
The Characters
At first, I really liked Meredith's character, because she was actually outgoing and all that, but then she just grew whiny and boring and I hated that. She shut people out just to be with Wit, and that is one of the worst things you could do to other people outside of your "relationship."
And now for Wit. I really liked him in the beginning, because he was funny and witty. Ha. I'm so funny. But my hatred for his relationship with Meredith has become all-consuming, so now I don't like him as much. I know that doesn't make sense.
I honestly liked the side characters more than the main characters, which is nothing something you usually want to happen, but here we are.
“You make me feel absolutely golden.”
The Relationship
Oh boy, well here we are. My FAVORITE part.
So, you may know by now that insta-love is the death of a romance book for me. Love at first sight? Hate. I love you's after a few dates or a few days? Jail. In the case of this book, they became friends faster than expected, and not just that, but they were CLOSE friends. Like "sleeping in the same bed with a total stranger" close. This story is set in the span of like a week, and they manage to say their "I love you's" in that set amount of time.
Not just that, but they were honestly SO obnoxious together. I do not say that often, but they were literally all over each other and I just wanted to get back to the game of Assassin, because I didn't care one bit about them. It was all just about those two and yes it is a romance book but I wanted to see more of the side characters.
I love rants.
“The sea air—I loved that smell. I’d missed that smell.”
So anyways, this was a major disappointment and I wish so badly that I'd liked it more, but here we are.
2.8 stars
“Taylor Swift’s early albums that summer, and there was this one song”
one of the few references
<><><><><><><> I'm just as confused as you are with this tbh. Maybe I'm being too picky, but I was so excited for this and instead I was just rolling my eyes and wanting to throw my book

(2.8 stars....I MIGHT bump it up to 3 if I'm feeling generous but don't hold your breath on that)
I had so much fun with this!! The relationship was so sweet and the grief the mc was going through broke my heart. So happy I finally read this!! It makes me want to go to Martha’s Vineyard so bad😭❤️

╰┈➤ this is the book that made me fall in love with K. L. Walther’s writing. she has since been an auto buy author for me! I read this book 3 years ago and I’ve reread it every year since then. this book is so nostalgic for me i don’t think I’ll ever rate it anything less than a 5 stars. like EH’s writing; K. L. Walther writes scenery so well and vividly that i feel like i’m there. these places that are in the book are actual places on Martha’s Vineyard. i think that’s what really enhances the book. i feel like listening to beach/boat music every time i read it! now plot wise this book follows Meredith. every summer her family comes to Martha’s Vineyard. they haven’t been in two years since Meredith’s sister, Claire, recently passed away. they come back bc someone in the family is getting married, and they incorporate their family game of assassin into the wedding festivities. Meredith meets a groomsman named wit and sparks fly 🤭 (see the little ts reference there 😋)

╰┈➤ i liked Meredith. sometimes she can get a little pick me but overall she’s a good fmc. i love how we still explore the aspect of grief with her throughout the book. it’s what makes her character have depth and i really enjoyed that part. people might argue it’s insta love but i don’t really care 😭 this takes place over a week so what were we expecting 😭😭 i loved her and wit’s relationship!
~ 𝑾𝒊𝒕 ~ 🌊
╰┈➤ as his name suggests he is in fact witty! another thing to add as to why i love K. L. Walther’s books is bc she knows how to write witty characters, and witty characters are my kryptonite 😫 wit was one of my favorite characters back in the day and he still is 😌 he’s such a golden retriever i love him 🫶🏼 the banter is soso good i eat it up every time! he reminds me a lot of Wes Bennett but with blonde hair.
~ 𝑷𝒓𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒌𝒂, 𝑳𝒖𝒍𝒊, 𝑬𝒍𝒊, & 𝑱𝒂𝒌𝒆 ~ 🌊
╰┈➤ the cousins! i like all of them except for Luli. like girl her sister recently died you can chill out over some snapchats she didn’t open 😭 i found her to be selfish and rude but whatever ig she came to terms with it by the end of the book. also she’s so passive aggressive 😭😭 she just annoys me 🙂 *aggressive eye twitch*

╰┈➤ one of my favorite summer books of all time! if ur looking for a book with immaculate summer vibes this is the one for you. I love this book so much that it’s on my ‘invisible string’ shelf. that’s like top tier reads for me. excited for her new book to release next year! (it’s inspired by Ferris Bueller’s day off which is one of my favorite movies of all time 🤭)

Meredith and her family go to Martha’s Vineyard every summer for as long as she can remember but last year was the first year her family didn’t go because her sister passed away in a tragic accident. This year she goes back with her family because her cousin is getting married. As Meredith is still struggling with the grief of losing her sister and her boyfriend literally breaking up with her 2 weeks before the wedding she isn’t all that excited about going to Martha’s Vineyard. On her way to the island on the ferry she has a conversation with her ex boyfriend which makes her upset so she hangs up and as she getting off of the car she accidentally kicks someone in the face but before finding who it is she runs off only later to find out the guy she accidentally kicks in the face is also part of the wedding party and that’s just the beginning.🤭

there’s things I loved and hated about this. it was a cute summer read and fairly easy to read and get through. I loved the aspect of the whole family playing assassin in honor of Claire. I loved how throughout the story you have different emotions one minute you feel the grief the fmc is feeling toward her sister, the anger of literally going through a breakup 2 weeks before, and the love of finding a summer fling when you least expect it and the possibility of being more than just a fling.
Those are the things I loved but now to the things I hated which might be more than the things I loved.
↓ ↓ ↓ warning: rants incoming ↓ ↓ ↓
°˖➴ firstly the whole story takes place in the span of a week and let’s be honest no one is falling in love after the second to third day of meeting someone. So this story is very insta lovey. I understand flirting with someone new and maybe just a fling but homegirl was basically ready to tell the mmc she was in love with him after the third day 😀
°˖➴ secondly homegirl HATED being called any nicknames like babe, baby, my girl, and pretty just because her ex used to call her that all the time. I get it but at the same time she was very overdramatic about it, when the mmc called her pretty for a second time she was basically losing it and she told him not to call her that because everyone says that she’s pretty and she’s more than that. again I understand where she’s coming from she wants to be more than just her looks but the way she went about it gave ‘pick me’ vibes. also at the same time she calls the mmc handsome and he didn’t want to be called that but she still called him that because she knew he still liked it??? from the beginning they both would called each other cheesy nicknames and she wants to find the perfect one for him and she wants the perfect one for herself but at the same time she hates all of them 😀 at that point I would just call her her fu*king name since she wants to be so dramatic about it 🗿
°˖➴ thirdly the freaking assassin game. in the beginning I loved the idea of it and I had fun reading about it but then homegirl acted like it was life or death if she didn’t win. At first she told herself she wanted to win for her sister to make her proud since her sister would always win and wanted to honor her. but of course after having to assassinate Wit she was battling with what to do and when he asked her if she had him she lied and said no and then she was battling with the voices in her head about “omg I lied to him he’s never going to forgive me” and all this other bs. Like miss girl calm down it’s just a game and obviously if I had someone as my target I am not telling them i do. And just like the end of the synopsis says ’she's at risk of losing both the game... and her heart’ like she took that a little too serious. 🌚 let’s also not forget that she was in an alliance with her friends and a secret pact with Wit and homegirl was battling with what side to be faithful to and who to help.
°˖➴ lastly but certainly not least homegirl kept bringing up her ex with Wit. even her inner monologue she kept comparing the two about this and that and I was sick of it. Wit is better than me because I would’ve just left her by herself is she kept bringing up her ex.
honestly I could keep going on and on about things I hated but im afraid I have crossed the line of this now being a hate/rant review and while writing out this review I even lowered my rating because of it (before this review it was a solid 3.5 stars) 😭😭😭

ˋ°•*ⁿ➷ characters:
ⁿ➴ Meredith: honestly I have no thoughts on her I think my thoughts above sum up everything you need to know about her 🙂
ⁿ➴ Wit: Wit Witry, his name?? lmaoo I’m so sorry if anyone out there irl is actually named Wit this is only for laughs and giggles😭 (technically his name isn’t Wit but that’s what everyone calls him and his real name is revealed toward the end and the nickname she finally uses for him) enough said on that. but he was the best thing about this honestly. firstly for putting up with Meredith and secondly because he was a bad*ss during the whole assassin game.
ⁿ➴ Luli: the only side character I will speak about. she was a bit*h tbh and I hated her in the beginning. when Meredith’s sister passed away she cut off all her friends and Luli was the one who reached out the most but was ignored because Meredith decided to spend all her time focused on Ben and no one else. But when Meredith came to the island she told her friends she was only focused on her friends and family but then she met Wit and that became her sole purpose and Luli kept making sneaky remarks about how he was the new Ben and would call him Ben instead of his actually name. That made me dislike her but she was coming from a place of hurt because she missed her friend but of course Meredith was only thinking about herself. So yes in the beginning I hated her but then I actually felt bad for her especially when she finally did apologize.

i think this book would’ve been better if it took place the whole summer rather than just a week.
also I’ve been in a huge review slump for months now and haven’t really put my full thoughts or efforts into my reviews until now 😭 I guess wanting to rant will make you actually do a full review 😂
now do I recommend this? ehh if you can get passed the insta love I think this is a good summer read and you would get through it pretty quickly.
ps ~ I loved the taylor swift references 🫶🏼

it should be a crime that i haven’t read a summer book yet 😭
this book gave me so many icks. the main character was so annoying, she cried way too much! when wit (love interest) called her pretty she literally started crying just because that’s what her ex called her. like miss girl calm down! it’s not a big deal.
also they are 19 and 18 but they act 16 and 15. ah it’s cringy. just the writing was so weird. for example this is one blurb of convo from wit and meredith: “you are so wicked” “and you go wild for it.” mmm just no. the flirting is bad, i didn’t like it. PLUS ITS AN INSTA-LOVE! eeeka no thanks.
i liked meredith and her sisters relationship better then wit and hers, and her sisters dead, so that’s saying something. i did not care for this couple if you can’t tell.
annnnyyywaaaayys i guess it was cute at some points but not really haha. thanks for reading my long rant on this book.
જⁿ➴ 𝟒.𝟎𝟎₊˚⊹💗 𝟘𝟝/𝟘𝟟/𝟚𝟝—𝟘𝟝/𝟘𝟡/𝟚𝟝 this book was so cute and had the BEST summer vibes ever in a book. i was so surprised that i enjoyed this book so much since i dnfed it twice before but this was SUCH a fun time!
i liked this book not so much for the characters individually but the vibes them together. they reminded me of sweet, high school love so much and it reminded me of ‘tsitp’ and ‘to all the boys i loved before’ mushed into one! it was definitely an insta love relationship which i normally dislike but it did feel very cute and well written in here! the summer vibes were also so strong and i HIGHLY recommend this for reading by a pool or a beach.
plot-wise, was this book the strongest? probably no. at times it felt as if nothing was really happening ‘assassin’ (the wedding game the book was revolved around)—wise. it was still very quick paced and easy to read but at times the games were lacking. i did enjoy the whole idea of the games however.
i overall just LOVED the vibes and kind of love this book had though and will definitely want to read other books with that kind of ‘cuteness’! will i think about this book anymore though? probably not even though it was a fun read.

•⿒⿒ if you’ve ever had a summer love then this book is perfect for you it’s the perfect culmination of everything that makes up a romance book it covers grief, heartbreak, confusion about your future and love the setting was so perfect !!! its like taking the setting of we were liars mixed with the romance of the summer i turned pretty and mushing them together to create perfection the taylor swift mentions were SO perfect because they added to the plot. they weren’t just thrown in there randomly, they meant something and added so much more of my love to it meredith was a great fmc. she is confused, grieving from heartbreak from losing her ex and her sister, but still so vibrant. hearing the stories, and seeing mer be so heartbroken over her sister hit deep. i teared up multiple times wit is my book bf. i mean, nothing will EVER top him. he is sarcastic, flirty, charming. the way he treats mer made my heart melt. the little touches between them, and jokes WERE SO CUTE literally so in love w both of them. the summer love aspect >>> like i think the author took the premise of meeting someone and not being able to stay away SO WELL. it was so sweet and i couldn’t stop blushing pls pls read this book because it was absolutely perfection and i will never stop thinking about it
