School’s Out Forever, I’ve Done My Time is one poet’s creative take on the typically bad, mad, sad and totally true events, situations and scenarios that occur daily in pupil referral units all over the country. Told from vastly the different perspectives of pupils, teachers, and parents, the poems capture everything from discipline, to different generations, and society’s expectations. Be warned, the poems pull no punches. They will rouse all kinds of emotions – from laughter to disbelief - and have you reflecting on life from every type of angle. Packed with imagination, humour, controversy, straight talking, and great conversation, you’ll find much to entertain. These poems will remain in your mind long after reading, not least for the stories they play out, but also for the serious undercurrent that sits between the lines of each and every verse.
'School's Out Forever' is a collection of poems written by Keira Gentle after she left her job teaching in a PRU (Pupil Referral Unit). The topics and issues addressed in the poems all sounded familiar and were very relatable. However, the poems themselves left quite a lot to be desired. I'm by no means an expert on poetry and don't read it very often, so maybe someone with more understanding than me might think differently, but to me the wording seemed forced. Random words and phrases seemed to be shoehorned in to make a rhyme and the rhythm was lacking. I'd get into a bit of rhythm reading the first few lines of a verse then the last line would just fall flat. Maybe this would have been better written as prose?
