Mr. Whiskers is dead—muerto—shuffled off his mortal coil.
All Laney had to do was watch the store and feed the cat. Too bad she hadn't known there was a cat.
She has a plan, though. An obscure spell contains the power to grant life, only long enough to save her job, and her vacation in Paris. Just because she botches the simplest of spells doesn't mean she can't control complicated magic, right?
The mysterious new guy at school, Kody, goes along for the ride; providing emotional support and, well, let's be honest, he's just hot.
After struggling through the spell—when nothing seems to be going right—they find that giving Mr. Whiskers a tenth life turns out to be more than they bargained for.
A single mother of 3, I love reading urban fantasy, especially young adult. The characters are less jaded and the romances are usually include the excitement of first loves. I decided to write the urban fantasy story that I wanted to read most, which includes a strong female protagonist, a believable and slow building romance and a dynamic villain. I hope I succeeded.
Cute little story of a teenage witch in training left to take care of the bookstore she works at while the owner is away. Only to later discover that she was suppost to also take care of "Mr. Whiskers" whom she assumes is the cat dead in the owner's apartment. Oops!
What I like about this story is the humor and banter of the characters. There is a superb story arc, takes you to a place, then quickly shifts gears to the unexpected, and the humor/horror is done just right to not be overly gross. Of course, the ending is the best and unforeseen. There were a few sections that got me to laugh aloud, which is not easy to do in the written form. Please note: I do not generally read YA and I know the authour, while my opinion may be biased, I am an honest enough person to tell my colleagues if I don't like their work. Considering this, I enjoyed the story very much.
Velmi čtivá dlhšia poviedka, s prekvapivým twistom na konci, páčila sa mi. Je výborná na voľnú chvíľku, pretože je to krátke dielko, dá sa zvládnut do hodinky.
A young witch is left to oversee a bookstore while the owner is out of town. She is told to feed Mr. Whiskers. Alas, she is not told that Mr. Whiskers is a large plant but instead assumes that a dead cat left for him to consume is Mr. Whiskers. She feels so bad that she let the assumed Mr. Whiskers perish that the rest of the book is spent with her working spells to transform other cats and such to take his place. It's all rather silly. Clever title, repetitive and cumbersome read.

Every cat has nine lives. Why? Who knows. When witch-in-training Laney inadvertently takes Mr. Whiskers ninth life because she didn't see the note stating to watch the book store and feed him from her boss, she tries to give him a tenth. She just has few problems when it comes to spell casting. Like getting them right. And that's for simple stuff.
Bringing the dead back to life? Yeah, not simple.
If she wants to keep her job and that nice trip to Paris she has no choice but to try. It's probably a good thing the hot looking mysterious new guy at school, Kody, is going along for the ride. She needs all the help she can get.
A cute, funny short story where two teens try to right a wrong and get seriously in over their as the situation continues to snowball out of control as the night goes on.
The Tenth Life of Mr. Whiskers was kinda cute, but ultimately it seemed like Gates was trying to shove way too much story (and backstory) into a novella. Everything happened at a breakneck pace, the relationship between Kody and Laney developed too quickly to be at all believable, and the resolution seemed a little easy. I think that were this a full-length novel, I probably would have enjoyed it, but as is it left me with more questions than answers.
On the plus side, it was a quick read (I read the entire thing while I was at the gym) and the cover art is really cute.
Two Stars: This book was not good for me. I can (probably) understand why someone else might like it, but I didn't. I won't be recommending it to anyone.
Being 24, I wasn't sure if I would enjoy the story much - as it sounded it was for a much younger audience. It turned out to be a rather funny, imaginative read that I thoroughly enjoyed. A few laughs were had and a couple "ews" were made but I think that was entirely the point of the story. I mean, we are trying to revive a deceased animal.
If you're looking for something short, funny, enjoyable and something that has an ending you most likely wouldn't expect, I would say definitely give this one a try!
Amusing enough story, although it doesn't stand well alone. It obviously belongs to a larger, expanded universe; it felt like I was reading a story in a well established series I hadn't read. If you like clumsy hapless witchy heroines and jerky teen boys with hearts of gold, plus disabled characters that aren't used for inspirational porn and zombies, then you'll likely enjoy this one. I'll be keeping this author on my personal radar.
This was a cute short story and I enjoyed the witchy, magical elements. Laney is a cute main character and I liked the awkward teen moments (especially with new guy Kody). It seemed liked this was going to be a part of a larger universe/story line so I felt like I was missing some details. I wish the story had been a little longer or had more explanations on the town/magic/Kody but I assume there will be more stories later to answer my questions.
This is the cutest short I've read in a while. The story line in full of teenage humor and complications. The characters are so cute and full of life. Play on words! Lol. Laney and Kody are so spontaneous and Laney really puts them in a spot. You will really get a laugh from this very cute short. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Highly recommended.
The Tenth Life of Mr. Whiskers was cute. A really fast read--took me maybe an hour and a half. Story of a witch in a witchy town left to take care of a book shop while her boss is out of town. A cute boy shows up and finds a note to her from her boss saying to feed of Mr. Whiskers. Problem is, it's been almost a week since her boss left and she hasn't even seen a cat... Hilarity ensues.
A cute story about a witch with magic problems who tries to resurrect mean kitty Mr Whiskers after she thinks she has killed him. A comical zombie animal situation ensues. Fun quick read.
Absolutely love this story. It was funny, entertaining, and the world she created was so fascinating. I would love to read more about these characters and about this world she created.
Awesome book! It had the right amount of humor, enough to make u laugh but not too much where u can't get serious during some parts. Gory but still great! Would recommend!
"Too bad you're not a necromancer," Kody said with a laugh.
Laney's laughter faded away as her brain kicked into gear. "Actually, my great-great-great grandmother was a necromancer. So, that makes me, like, one-sixteenth or something, right?"
"Yeah, I don't think it works that way." He scooted to the edge of the couch and watched as she paced back and forth. "You're starting to scare me."
