My name is Addison Holmes, and I teach history at James Madison High School in Whiskey Bayou, Georgia. You might be under the assumption that my life went to the dogs when my fiance left me at the altar for the home economics teacher, or when I got notice that my apartment building was going to be condemned, or even when I was desperate enough to strip to my unmentionables to earn some extra cash. The truth is that I'm pretty much used to disasters following me around on a daily basis, but I could have gone without finding my principal dead in the parking lot of a seedy gentlemen's club. After the initial shock of finding my first dead body, which included throwing back shots of Jack Daniels like it was water, I decided to take stock of my life. I was in a desperate situation and if the school board ever found out I'd been a stripper, even a bad stripper, I'd be jobless as well as fiance-less and homeless. Fortunately, I had a friend who felt sorry enough for me to give me a job doing some surveillance work at her detective agency. Not to mention the fact that I was now able to stick my nose into other people's business for a good cause, find a murderer, and pick up helpful tips from an incredibly attractive detective. Two chapters in, I was all set to declare Liliana Hart the next Janet Evanovich. By the end of the novel, not so much.
Addison Holmes is a very funny protagonist, and I wish her well as Hart develops her over the next several novels in the series.
But this book just has too many problems. Let’s start with editing. Whoever edited this novel was not paying attention. One chapter has a dialogue segment in which Addison is coerced by her friend Kate to go out on a blind date. By the next chapter, that plot device has completely disappeared, never to be seen again. Later, Addison’s friend Detective Nick Dempsey orders her to stay with her friend Kate to keep her safe. Next morning she wakes up in her own condo. No explanation of what happened.
The humor contains way too many pratfalls. Addison may be a clutz, but she’s not the Three Stooges. No one could be that much of a physical bumbler and still be alive.
The supporting characters have disjointed personalities. One minute they behave one way, the next minute they behave in an entirely different manner. It’s disorienting for the reader.
Finally, the ending. Now, I’m the first person to be willing to suspend my disbelief to enjoy a surprise ending, but this one is so implausible that even I found it too absurd to take seriously.
Ms. Hart, I am truly sorry to be so negative. If it wasn’t for the bad editing, I probably wouldn’t have looked so hard for other flaws. But there it is, and I have to be honest. I hope your subsequent novels about the adventures of Addison Holmes address some of these issues. As I said, she is a very funny protagonist, and deserves better treatment.

2.5 Stars for Whiskey Rebellion: Addison Holmes Mysteries, Book 1 (audiobook) by Liliana Heart read by Connie Ventress.
I really tried to like this audiobook. It reminds me of other stories that are kind of over the top and they have fun narration but this one just kind of missed the mark for me on every count. The story and the narration just lacked the charm that I’ve grown to love by others.

I might have liked this book more if Addison wasn't such an idiot and her love interest wasn't so creepy.

3.5 Stars~~~This was a cute-light-funny read with a touch of sexy. Yes, there were Stephanie Plum hijinks, but I still liked Addison. The story was a bit slow starting...the curse of most first books of a series. Things got going around the 45% mark. Addison and Nick (the hot cop) have great banter. There were some really funny parts, too, and Addison's mom is a hoot. I did think the ending was a bit rushed. This was an Amazon freebie that hit the mark...it made me want to read the next. This was a nice light read to throw in between more serious reads.

A Mediocre Book
This is such a shame, because there was no reason for this book to be so mediocre. I liked the character – she reminds me of someone I know – and I felt the plot was a good one. She starts of as an inexperienced and none too impressive stripper, so there’s comedy there right from the start. However, despite the fact that I consider myself to be a man of the world I had no idea what a ‘bustier’ was or indeed ‘pasties.’ I assumed ‘pasties’ was a euphemism for her pale boobs but they’re apparently decorative coverings for a stripper’s nipples – so she’s not exactly much of a stripper.
A ‘bustier’ by the way is a close-fitting strapless top worn by women in 1970’s.
And this is what spoiled the book for me, in that the author uses ridiculous ‘fillers’ to bulk it out instead of cracking on with the storyline. We learn that large women shouldn’t wear horizontal stripes, that Rose Marie has permed blonde hair, that Addison is wearing a short black skirt, a George Michael tank top that says FAITH in hot pink glitter, a pair of flip flops and an oversized straw hat and that Kate’s wearing a pinstripe suit and sensible flat shoes.
We then learn that Addison has a 1950’s wool day dress with a flared skirt and a thin black belt in her closet. WOW! How fascinating is that? I found myself forgetting about the plot, interested only in what else Addison kept in her closet, but I was distracted from these thoughts because Addison ‘skipped the pantyhose, slipped on a pair of three-inch strappy sandals, grabbed a pink rain slicker (that’s a raincoat), and shoved a bunch of Kleenex in her coat pockets.’
Do you see what I mean by ‘fillers’? An absolutely useless paragraph that serves no purpose whatsoever apart from bulking out the book.
It gets worse. We have to endure a shopping trip to look for a dress for a hot date. She finds a suitable dress, by the way, but is advised by Rose Marie that it would look better with Spanx. Another word I had to look up. It’s some kind of a corset or girdle, I think, with a pee hole that …. Oh, what do I know? Anyway, who cares? It’s got absolutely nothing to do with the plot.
Hang on, is there a plot? I haven’t the faintest idea. I gave up at that stage. I just couldn’t bear it any longer. I honestly couldn’t care less what Addison was going to wear next, or Nick for that matter, or Kate, or Rose Marie, or anyone. I was unprepared to fight my way through all these fillers just to get to a plot …. If there was one.
The author, by the way, prides herself on enjoying contact with her readers. I don’t think so. I started following her on Twitter but she couldn’t be bothered to follow back, which is unprofessional and rude. She has 5681 followers, and is following just 917 people, meaning that she only follows back about 17% of her fan base, so not exactly making too much of an effort to connect with her readership.
I’d give this book a miss.

Okay, this book is hysterical. It’s a true comedy of errors. Poor Addison is a high school history teacher with an incredibly awesome (and expensive) car, a penchant for ice cream, and a horrible run of bad luck. Having been left at the altar by her scumbag fiance, who was of course busted banging her bimbo arch-nemesis (also the home-economics teacher from the same school she teaches at), and living in an apartment about to be condemned, she doesn’t currently have the funds to buy the adorable house of her dreams. Having made a bargain with the local sleezebag banker to have the money to him in 60 days, she’s desperate for money.
Enter her ill-fated — and incredibly short-lived — career as a stripper. Not only does she have absolutely zero talent for stripping, but she spies her Assistant Principal from school in the audience. Immediately after her only dance, her career as a stripper is over, and grateful to make her escape and put this horrible day behind her, she literally trips over a dead body in the parking lot of the strip club.
Unfortunately for Addison, things are rarely simple, and the body she stumbled over belongs to the same Assistant Principal who minutes ago was getting a lap-dance from another dancer and taking lewd photos of Addison during her performance.
Enter policehottie detective, Nick Dempsey. Immediately at odds with Addison, both feel an intense pull of attraction. However, neither lets that small fact get in the way of their animosity, and soon it seems that Addison can’t decide whether she wants to rip Nick’s clothes off and have her dirty, dirty way with him, or clobber him over the head with whatever heavy object happens to be handy. Or maybe both.
When Addison’s best friend, Kate, who also happens to be a private detective, takes pity on Addison and agrees to hire her to do some surveillance for her agency in exchange for $100 a day. Addison jumps at the chance, but she’s not exactly the most circumspect woman in town, and while she does get some good results, her methods are unorthodox to say the least…
Overall, I loved it. A perfect summer read, this is lighthearted and funny, while still possessing a pretty well executed (no pun intended) murder mystery. While Nick and Addison never go all the way, I think romance readers will still enjoy all the UST, the transformation from enemies to partners, and the delicious moments where it looks as though these two crazy kids might actually score.
While Addison does have a tendency to have quite a few Too Stupid To Live moments, the sheer amusement gained by reading her escapades is enough, in my opinion, to make it worth reading. And since at the moment it’s only $0.99 for the Kindle version, you really can’t pass it up.

If anyone had talked to me like Nick talks to Addison, they'd be picking themselves up off the floor.
He told her she was stupid so many times, it just boggles my mind why she stayed interested in him. There is something more than a good body... like being a nice, respectful person. Nick was a mysoginstic little shit.

Addison Holmes is a middle school history teacher in Georgia who tries out stripping and private detective work as a way to help with her messy financial situation caused by poor spending choices and wedding debt leftover from when her fiancé left her at the altar. On her first and only day as a stripper, she finds a dead body. Then, she uses her new side hustle for her friend's private investigator business to insert herself into the investigation. There's also a bit of open-ended romance, which I assume will resolve in future books.
Calling Whiskey Rebellion, the first of the Addison Holmes mysteries, a southern Evanovich's Stephanie Plum rings true. If you enjoy the zany adventures of Stephanie in New Jersey, then there's a good chance you'll enjoy Addison's Georgia adventures. To be fair, though, early Evanovich is better written with better plots. Let that sink in for a second. This is truly only a 1 to 2 star book, but the great humor bumped it up to 3. The mystery and how it's solved doesn't make much sense, or even why most of it happens. There are 2 big plot points that I'm still trying to decide why they were included, as it hurt rather than helped plot development. But...I laughed out loud a few times and giggled at a few others. I liked it, but I'm still on the fence about continuing the series with hopes for improved plots.

The book started off great. The MC's in a pretty predicament - she's just found out that her career as a stripper is a total bust and she sees her boss. Huh. Then said boss gets murdered and she meets a hot detective. Next, she begins investigative work and ends up embroiled in this huge conspiracy. Pretty interesting right?
But why 2 stars? Well, that's because the plot turned out to be really disappointing and frankly, I thought it was stupid. The ending was just so ridiculously absurd. I had such high hopes for this book because I read the author's JJ Graves series and it was amazing. This... not so much. I expected a mind-boggling and thought-provoking reason behind everything. Instead, I was like 'is that it? That's it. Huh.'
Additionally, I didn't really like the MC all that much. She was funny and all, but personally, I thought she was an airhead with attitude. And it's like she's been cursed to trip and fall over anything and everything. It confounds me that she has not been injured to the point of needing admittance to the ER.

Review by Ursula: An entertaining, fun read. Addison has a knack for getting into trouble. She has horrible luck and it's only going to get worse. The story was well told from a first person point of view and moved the action on at a steady pace. Addison's mom, best friend and co-worker are the perfect addition to the story. They make the story more interesting and provide relief from Addison's horrible mishaps that seem to happen at an unnatural pace.
Nick, the cop working on the murder case that Addison first reported when she tripped over the body, was a likeable character and you enjoyed the scenes he was in. He is a good cop, very capable and determined; because of that, this is where the only problem I have with the story comes up. Overall, the story is worth reading. It is well written, entertaining and a quick read. I enjoyed the character developement of each of the principles. There were several different people involved, but Liliana gives you enough character building for each one that you feel you get to know them.
Nick, the cop working on the murder case that Addison first reported when she tripped over the body, was a likeable character and you enjoyed the scenes he was in. He is a good cop, very capable and determined; because of that, this is where the only problem I have with the story comes up. True story: I was looking for an ebook on Amazon and I passed this by twice, thinking it probably wasn't my thing. Then I accidentally tapped the screen and downloaded it. My first thought was "no, no, no!" My second thought was "eh, whatever. I've got it now, may as well try it."
Best. Happy. Accident. Ever.
I love this book. There's nothing I don't like about this book. Okay, maybe I don't like that books #2 and #3 aren't also free ebooks on Amazon at the moment but I love #1 so much that I just might be willing to cough up the cash for the other two. I probably will.
I didn't expect to laugh so hard over a book that involved the murders of three people. I probably looked, and sounded, silly sitting around or lying in my bed laughing out loud (not just little snickers and giggles, mind you) while I read.
Addison Holmes is hysterical, intriguing, and real. She's every girl. If I were a high school history teacher, I can see myself doing the things Addison does. I was rooting for her through the whole story. I was rooting for her to succeed in stripping, private investigating, and falling in love with the sexy detective to get over a broken heart.
I stayed up way too late a bunch of nights reading this book and now it's over too soon. I think I'll have to start it all over again. Soon!

This was so laugh out load funny at times. Addison Holmes needs money quick! She is on the hook to buy a cute little house in her native Whiskey Georgia and due to be homeless in 90 days or something like that, as her apartments are due to be condemned. So what does any smart, 9th grade teacher do, go and get a stripper job...yes that would have been the first thing I thought of. Now, her career as a stripper is very short lived shall we say as Addison may be a pretty woman, but her middle name isn't Grace. If I would have tried to be a stripper, this is what would have happened to me...I could see it in my head ergo all the laughter. Of course seeing her school principle in the audience has put a kebash on the endeavor. Of course Addison stumbling over his dead body in the parking lot of The Foxy Lady doesn't help either. Queue the sexy detective as Nick walks in the club and finds a slight drunk Addison to try and take her statement. She was upset and decided a little drink would calm her down. There were several times in the book where I could identify with her zany antics as she works to get her killer and her man! I am for sure going to pick up the rest of the series, as Addison and Nick are dancing around one another and I am going to bust if I don't find out if he gets the girl, or the girl gets him...or kills him at this rate. :-)

Thank goodness it was short because I don't think I could stand any more of Addison Holmes. What. A. Moron. Totally unbelievable that a cop would even give her the time of day.
Add in the disjointed bits (other reviewers have already pointed these out, and yes they are annoying) and the fact that there is not one likable character in the whole story, and this is the beginning of a series I will never, ever be buying into.
I gave it two stars because I found some of it quite entertaining, and maybe if I hadn't found the protagonist SO irritating I'd have forgiven the plot holes.

This was a kobo freebie. Addison is very Stephanie Plum-like right down to being the accident magnet, cop boyfriend and small town. Takes a second job as a PI too. Not a bad read, different enough from Plum to keep me interested. Can't wait to see if Ranger shows up in Book 2 lol!

2.5 stars. This was very meh. I was basically raised on this type of comedy-mystery books – then written by Janet Evanovich, starring the heroine Stephanie Plum with love interests and side-kicks Joe Morelli (cop) and Ranger (bounty hunter). This felt like a pale imitation of those books. The heroine, Addison Holmes, felt like a less interesting and likeable Stephanie knock-off and the love interest, Jake, felt like a merger of Morelli and Ranger… which was a little weird when he had to take on both the (bounty hunter)P.I. role and the Cop role. I think I could have liked this story a little better if I hadn’t read… I don’t even know how many of those books before now. I didn’t really warm to Addison though, she was a little… I don’t know, harsh. I also thought Jake was kind of a creep, and the whole ‘I stripped you down while you were unconscious’ bit was a little icky. The Stephanie plum books also have better secondary characters, but given that this is the first book in a series that might change later on.
I think another contributing factor to my not really liking this story was the fact that I’ve spent over a year reading it, exclusively on my phone, and mostly on my breaks at work. The only reason I finished it now was that I needed another book to meet my already once lowered 2015 reading goal. I did find myself liking the ending a bit more than the beginning of the book, even though the mystery resolution was a little anti-climactic and didn’t really explain things too well. I’m not saying a definite no to reading another book in the series, but I probably wouldn’t buy one myself.

Addison Holmes needs more money than she makes as a teacher so she takes a job at a strip club. Turns out she is not good at stripping so her first dance is also her last. She freaked when she saw her principal in the audience. But when she saw him taking pictures of her, she was sure he was going to fire her. As she was leaving Addison tripped over the principal's dead body in the parking lot.
The cop handling the investigation is Nick Dempsy and there is an immediate attraction between the pair. They also drive each other nuts and want to throw something at each other.
This is hilarious! I laughed so hard reading the first couple of chapters that I could hardly see the words. It's a wonderful mystery with Addison trying to solve the murder of her principal even though she has no investigative skills what so ever.
Addison is funny but a bit of an airhead. She is ready to fight for whatever she feels is important but kind of ditsy and clumsy. Nick is very professional and does his job really well. I didn't get what Nick saw in Addison and why he was attracted to her. I guess he thought she was sexy. Since Addison and Nick were really hot for each other I didn't understand why their date bombed. I really wanted Addison to find her special guy. And he was special. Almost too special for her.
I enjoyed this fun mystery and recommend it if you want a laugh.

So this book has a 4.01 average rating. Interesting. I really must have missed something here. I recently discovered Liliana Hart through her J.J. Graves series (which I enjoyed quite a lot) and thought I would give this a try. Bad idea.
The MC is silly and acts like a teenager, her main squeeze is a walking cliché, the plot is uninteresting, the book is just amazingly dull and not the least bit funny. Janet Evanovich this is not. I didn't enjoy the last few Stephanie Plum instalments I read but they were much more entertaining than this book, which is saying a lot!

Think of perfect simplicity... like Christina Lauren mixed with Southern Sass and a few dashes of humor. No deep plot, no need for "dark" or "steamy" add on's , just simple and funny. Every single character is vibrant with color and so likable . Wish I had found this series sooner and not sure why more people haven't read this series.

Funny, sassy, poignant. Addison’s antics and her ability to find trouble are hilarious. Her sarcastic comebacks are laugh out loud funny. And the chemistry between her and Detective Dempsey is steamy. Can’t wait to read 2nd in series
