Mizushiro Setona (ˮǤȤ in Japanese, or ˮѩ in Chinese language) is a popular mangaka who started out in the djinshi circles.
Her first real dabble in the world of creating manga was in 1985 when she participated in the publication of a djinshi. She remained active in the djinshi world until her debut in 1993 with the short single "Fuyu ga Owarou Toshiteita" (Winter Was Ending) that ran in Shgakukan's Puchi Comic magazine. Though her current drawing style is high on the aesthetic value, her earlier works had less finesse. Regardless of the lesser emphasis on the visual elements in her earlier works, her popularity grew largely due to her unparalleled grasp for storytelling. Her works are noted for their slightly askew plots and deep exploration of the human psyche. Even her lighthearted Shjo works usually have darker underlying elements. With an incomparable ability to craft stories that puzzle, sadden, assure, pervert, and move the depths of one's heart, she has gained a cult-like following. Her works include shojo, josei, and yaoi, and have been translated into multiple languages, including English, Italian, French and German.
Rilettura.
Bukan jaminan di kemudian hari si 'sindrom' ga kumat lagi.., tapi setidaknya mereka pernah belajar menghadapinya, berhasil melaluinya ketimbang sekedar kabur.
I read this manga years ago, and it was a quite enjoyable read. Different than many of the other manga I'd normally read. I need to re-read this some day :)
Content warnings for physical abuse, attempted suicide, and stalking/harassment.
Rika injured herself a while back and took some time off the track team as a result. She's now in her third and final year of high school and, although she's technically all healed up, she's left the track team and keeps resisting the pleas of her former coach and teammates to rejoin. What one of her former teammates doesn't realize is that her new boyfriend used to be Rika's boyfriend - he dumped Rika not too long ago.
Rika feels depressed and disconnected from her school life but is intrigued when someone in an anonymous school chat room suggests blowing up the school (why this isn't an immediate red flag for school officials, I don't know - I find it difficult to believe that a school chat room wouldn't have some form of monitoring in place). Following some clues, she eventually ends up meeting and getting to know several people from the chat in real life.
I recall Setona Mizushiro's After School Nightmare being an interesting series, albeit not really one I enjoyed (although, looking back, my reviews say otherwise, huh). It was a little too dark and unsettling for my tastes, and the character relationships made my skin crawl.
So far, X-Day seems to be a bit more straightforward. Rika, who goes by the name "11" in the chatroom, appears to be an accomplished student with no reason to hate school, but in reality she feels like her former track teammate is taking everything from her. She desperately wants to stop feeling anything about track team and her ex-boyfriend. The various visitors to the Ursa Minor chatroom, controlled by a girl who uses the name "Polaris," also have things in their lives that are stressing them out and depressing them and have decided that blowing up the school (at night, when no one is around to get hurt) will somehow help.
Part of my problem with this series is that the characters' motivations seem so weak. Okay, so they're all having problems for one reason or another. However, only one or two of them are having problems that are directly linked to being at school (and whether blowing up the building would actually fix their problems is a whole other issue...). The rest of them just seem to be going along with the idea for some reason. Is it the social aspect? They all finally found someone they could talk to and be their true selves with, and since one or two of them want to blow up the school, they all decided to go along with it? I don't know. I suppose I could sort of understand it if the whole chatroom group were composed of teens, but one of the members is a teacher. It boggles my mind that he got involved in this too, even considering his situation.
Well, one more volume to go. Will they actually manage to blow up the school, or will they get found out before they do anything too drastic? Will Rika's actions drive a wedge into the group? Will that one teacher manage to get a job someplace else or will his obsessed stalker push him over the edge? I guess I'll find out soon.
--- X - Day 1-2 --- Plot: Ok Gambar: Thumb up untuk penggambaran ekspresi karakternya. Penokohan: Sifat-sifat karakternya lumayan solid. Itulah tema utama X-Day.
This short manga series is a story that has a great grasp of it's character's psychology. Mizushiro's artwork and writing is uniquely beautiful and inspiring to me, this will definitely be added to my favorite manga shelf and I can see myself re-reading this story months from now.
This series is not a happy high school story. Its dark, bleak, with just a bit of bittersweet. I love this authors way of writing a disturbingly beautiful, melancholy, and yet feel good story.
This is such an underrated manga, it sucked that the series didn't continue and just ended with only two volumes created in the world. Luckily i was able to get the volumes during middle school when i was first starting my manga collection. I read this series at least once a year since it was the first manga i ever bought for my manga collection. The book is about a girl named Rika Saginuma, A senior in highschool who is an ex-athlete she used to do jump polling. She ends up going to a chat room in her computer room at school and ends up mentioning that she wants the school to "disappear" since all the things are happening in her life is bad, her best friend is dating her ex (Rikas ex) but her bestie doesn't know. This girl named Polaris ends up making a separate group chat for those who were serious about bombing the school. Rika ends up figuring out the code name for the group chat,There are four people in the group and they are all slowly buying fireworks to create a bomb to blow up the school. Until then they are waiting for the day they are going to bomb the school which they named it "X-Day".
What I like about Setona Mizushiro's writing is that she seems like she really remembers what it was like to be a teenager, when all of life's problems were melodramatic and everything was the end of the world. I also love her art and the sleepy expression of her characters, especially Rika.
The storyline of this was cute and clear to follow. I like the idea of a teacher wanting to blow up the school, as well as some of the pupils. The teacher and his hamster were very cute! Looking forward to reading the next volume of this.
My first instinct is to rate it 3 stars, but my deep sympathy with the characters, and the connection I felt, the satisfaction I recieved, despite this only being a 2 volume series, warrents at least one more star.
It's not as petty as the blurb would have you believe. But when life is shit, what would you do to escape? You can wreck havoc, destroy that which hurts you, or hurt yourself, or someone you love. So here is the premise: they plan to blow up the school, rather than suffer another day of indignation in it's shadow.
I don't know how to explain it properly, reading this book, i really felt as i could start crying at some point. Doesn't matter if many people will never understand.
I'm liking this a lot more than I should. The premise sounds dark, and it is, but the reality of the story still revolves around drama. It's just a dark pact was made, and like everything else that you don't want to happen in this world it creeps in regardless. That's not to say that because there's drama that it is a happy-go-lucky high school extravaganza. These kids are depressed. And as I've heard before; you can't quantify suffering.
Four anonymous users meet up with a dark purpose. Friendship, or more closely, kinship blooms and it's entertaining to watch. However, I'd be wary...it sounds like good music until someone strikes the wrong chord purposefully to chaotic effect.
?abucak okudum. Sadece 2 kitaptan olu?uyor olmas? da sevince, zd.
Pernah ga sih lo disakiti sampe rasanya pengen ngancurin dunia?
Semakin sering bertemu, mereka sadar. Seberat apapun masalahnya, mereka nggak sendiri. Perlahan-lahan mereka saling melengkapi dan akhirnya tau kalo setiap masalah punya solusiTAPI BUKAN NGELEDAKIN SEKOLAH YA BUKAN Kita cuma perlu membuka hati untuk melihatnya /EA/
Holy manga stars, where do I begin? I love this manga for so many reasons, but I'll try to make it brief (and by try, I mean I won't at all). I love Rika, the main character. She's a star athlete with a future ahead of her, but she suffers from anxiety so great that she deems less of herself and more of dirt, which is devastating to see. Why she gave up something she was so passionate about is a mystery to me, but in reading the sequel next, I might find out, so no spoilers, please. All I want to do is crawl into the book, hug Rika and remind her high school is just one part of life that everyone has to go through in one way or another. I get it, you want to destroy what hurt you the most, I really do, but hang on, because you have to go through the darkness to find the light. I wouldn't be surprised if this series concludes with Rika not blowing up the school with her new-found friends (Polaris, Mr. Money, and Jangalian) and simply living as lifelong companions knowing each other's pain and not judging each other for it. I don't want to give any more spoilers, so I'll end there. If you're someone going through high school, or are someone who's experiencing traumas in your personal life, read this book; it might make you feel a little less alone. This book is dark, but it's beautiful, and I'm labeling it a favorite in my List of Favorite Books of All Time! I hope y'all enjoy!
I plowed through this manga in an hour, and I couldn't get enough of it. Semi-depressed senior Rika was the school's star athlete, and then things went downhill. Her boyfriend of three years dumps her, she gets injured and can't play sports, and no one seems to understand the saddness she feels.
One day she goes on a school chat room to kill some time, only to discover it's full of friendly people ranting about the school under clearly false screen names. After a (semi)pleasant ranting session, Rika says "I wish this place called a school would just disappear."
Unluckily for her, one person takes her VERY seriously and suggests they bomb the school.
She eventually gets to meet said people and finds that they all have a reason to want to do something so distructive.
I think that the series was surprisingly filled for a typical 200 page Tokyopop Manga. It was one of the classic examples of a book that captivates and leaves you questioning.
Warning: This review includes all volumes of this manga and may contain spoilers.
Four different people band together to blow up their school. I like the premise of this manga. Seemed unique and interesting enough. However, when reading the actual manga, I was a bit disappointed. I liked the start, but when we start learning about everyone's problems, I found that I got bored. I didn't like how the mangaka paired up the couples, either. I found it a bit cliche. I do like how Setona gives open endings and leaves it up to the reader's imagination to guess how things end. I liked the ending of this one, yes.
The side story was great, however. I think I liked it more than the story itself. It was just so.. Strong. I don't really know how to describe it. This was a fast read. Not the best manga out there, but it was fair. If you're into romance and all, that is.
Realmente me gust este manga. ?Porqu?
Rika is depressed after her life takes a few wrong turns. She meets 3 other people, who feel as equally bad as she does, in a chat room. The 4 depressed characters form a destructive friendship and a dark plan. It kept me intrigued and scared for these characters. They each have their own reasons for participating in this dark plan and they will all make you feel sympathetic. It kind of opens your eyes to the rest of the people, the ones you usually look past. And today, with all of the crime spreading throughout our world, this provides a unique perspective that we never get to see from the people causing the chaos. I would recommend sticking to the age restriction on this book, and only reading it if you are 16 or older.
Completely melodramatic, with tinges of Heathers without any of the dark comedy. It's a short series (only 2 volumes), so it's moving along quickly, but very much at the expense of the characters who are one-note (although those notes may hit on guilty pleasure character tropes for some readers). Additionally, the inconsistent art really makes it hard to look at. Some panels are quite lovely, but in others the characters are only recognizable by their hair, their faces are so poorly drawn. The artist seems to have trouble when trying to draw from a slightly below/to the side (not fully profile) angle.
I'd had a friend recommend this to me for my 50 books by women challenge when she found out I'd read almost no manga. From the description I wasn't sure if it was really up my alley, but I ended up enjoying it far more than I expected. I like the art, I like the characters, and the story seems interesting so far. I'll definitely give the next book in the series a read, too.
What happens when a side-tracked track star, a loligoth, an abused teenage boy and a biology teacher meet in a highschool online chatroom? They plot to blow up the school, of course. Maybe they should have set up a Glee club instead. *snicker*
