When a writer turns cartoonist, but can't turn loose of her typewriter, On Getting Old for the First Time is the result. At least it was for best-selling author Peg Bracken, whose new book is illustrated (or decorated, her preferred word) with pictures of Emily -- her wry but often-wistful heroine.Millions of women are familiar with Bracken's The I Hate to Cook Book. Now Bracken takes on the interesting matter of getting old for the first time -- a fascinating, universal project that all of us tackle, sooner or later.
Peg reviews the many issues of aging for women (and sometimes men too). Her usual humor makes the tale more fun to read along with the sketches of 'Emily'. She offers the many ways of coping with the problems, frank & humorous with the ways they do and don't work. A good read for thought.
Had found this among my late Mom's books and, remembering Peg Bracken, held onto it it. I turned 65 last month and have so enjoyed reading it. I will it keep for re-reading now and again.
